I think one point of clarification no one has made is this: when talking
about using manual we're only speaking of the camera. The flash remains in
TTL. So you set the camera to whatever shutterspeed and aperture you want
to use and the flash tries to make up for the rest of the exposure. For
example: If I'm shooting indoors I'll generally start with 1/60 @ F4 and
bracket. Or I'll turn down the shutterspeed if I want to use more ambient
light. If I'm shooting a sporting even and I need flash, I go with
1/200-1/250, depending on which camera I'm using, and the lowest aperture
my lenses can offer.
