Hi,

I don't know what new camera prices are like where you live, but in the US
market, that's a lot to pay for an 11-year-old camera with 11-year-old
technology--or at least it's a lot if it's not an EOS 1. The current B&H price
for the Elan 7 is US$430, and with it you're getting the most current
technology--which, with electronic cameras such as these, is an important
consideration.

I was looking at an Elan 7/EOS 30 just the other day, and it seemed pretty nice.
For the price, I think for most people it's easily a better choice than the
A2/5--more advanced metering and AF, a little more compact and accepts a real
battery pack, seemingly more robust and (we assume) no Command Dial problem.
About the only reasons I can see to choose an EOS 5 over the 30 are if you need
a 1/8000 sec. shutter speed, the 3.5% spot meter (compared to the 30's 10%
partial metering), or a pc socket for studio flash. Beyond that, the EOS 30
seems a superior camera to the EOS 5. The differences are perhaps not
significant enough to justify trading in a 5 for a 30 (or at least I'm not
considering doing so for the time being), but if starting without either, the 30
is the clear choice, IMO.

It is somewhat unfortunate, however, that the 30 doesn't use the N-3 remote
socket found on the 3 and the 1V--this would allow use of the Timer Remote
80-N3, which includes an interval feature. Instead you get the RS-60E3 from the
Elan, Rebel, and IX lines.

Thanks, B&H!

Speaking of B&H, does anyone happen to know whether there's a more recent
edition of B&H's "Professional Photo Sourcebook" than the 1998 edition I have?
