As they were originally conceived, the barcode reader is pretty
pointless, yes. A silly feature for dumb consumers. However, one
interesting thing about them is that someone has reverse-engineered
the barcode format.

This means that if you have the correct barcode printing software
you can actually write your own programs if you like. And on the
100/Elan you can replace the built-in programs for the various idiot
(PIC) modes - they're stored in EEPROMs or whatever. Unfortunately on
the 10 you can only replace the barcode setting - the idiot mode
settings are in ROM.
The only drawback for me is I haven't found a non-commercial barcode
printer program for the MacOS. I have to mess around in DOS to get
barcode printing to work. Oh well.
