I'm pretty sure it would be a cross-type sensor if it was possible. I
will not believe that those restrictions are for marketing reasons. I
believe they are truly trying the get every inch of performance from the
AF systems. Why EOS 50e (as well as EOS 7, 5 1N...?) has a cross-type
sensor in the middle that works down to 5.6... I don't know. Maybe they
are different in some ways. To put this another way, why would somebody
_not_ want to retain cross-type AF down to f/5.6 or f/8? Why would Canon
deliberately limit the AF capabilities of their top cameras? Or is
something sacrified by having a cross-type sensor instead of just linear?

I have both 3 and 50e...

EOS 3 is much faster, but I have to admit that it's not at all as accurate
as it should be. With EOS 50e I never missed the focusing point, but with
EOS 3... (of course it's a easier for the camera to choose from 3(4) than
from 45. Limiting the points to 11 helps a lot) ...well I use it less and
less. On occasions where I know what I'm going tp be shooting exactly I
use manual selection - I just wish it did have the same extra button as
1V has... :-(

Well, EOS 3 wins again. No surprices here.

Again EOS 3 wins easily. And widening the AF area helps sometimes quite a
lot.

Haven't noticed any differences. Maybe I'll have to try out. Maybe I'll
also see the limit of f/4.0 working... :-)
I haven't tried EOS 7 ever, but sounds like much nicer than EOS 50e...
maybe the AF is also better. At least I hope there is progres (although it
doesn't have the same system as EOS3/1V)
Best regards,
