I agree with plumviewer here. While the loss of one sensor direction
with slower lenses is certainly causing the AF to be "less than
optimal", it does not mean that the AF will be real bad. I use the
same lens on my 1N, which shuts off one direction of the central
sensor with lenses slower than f/2.8. While it's quite easy to prove
this by trying to AF on a scene with horizontal detail only (like a
door frame), I have never encountered noticeable problems during *real*
shooting.
