Pierre:

I've also been tempted to purchase this lens to (1) complement my 28-135 IS
and (2) at times replace my 70-200/2.8L and 1.4X/2.0X in my backpack.

So far I have rented the lens four times for a total of 8 days of shooting
desert, ocean and urban landscapes for about 25 rolls worth of slides (Velvia,
E100VS, Provia 100F and 400F).

While I agree with everyone that the lens is very sharp (although I do feel
that it as good at 70-200 at comparable focal lengths), there are two things
that have kept me from plunking down the money and purchasing it:

(1) I *hate* the push-pull design. I know that some folks prefer one touch
to two touch zoom design, however I am the reverse. I do not feel that the
'feel', 'quickness' and 'accuracy' of zooming is as good with the 100-400 when
compared to my 70-200.

(2) I do not like having to continously tighten and loosen the adjustable
zoom collar (name?) in order to keep the lens from sliding back and forth. A
lot of times this lens is being carried in my hand or around my neck and I
need to keep the lens from zooming out between shots. Hmmm... now that I
think about it, the second thing I don't like about it is due to the push-pull
design... did I tell you that I *hated* that design?

If the 100-400 had been a two-touch, B&H would have already charged my card!

BTW, I looked at the 75-300 IS as a cheaper way to get IS beyond the 135mm of
the 28-135 IS and my problem with that lens is the rotating front (due to
micro USM) and less than spectacular image quality...

Just my .02...
