Not that comparison, but I shoot with a 70-200 + 2X
quite a bit, and I find the EOS focuses as well as, or
better than, an EOS 1n with that lens.  I get very few
out of focus shots, and those that are are generally
totally out of focus, because the camera locked onto
the background for a moment.  Something I think does
help is to use CF 17-1, to effectively "widen" the
focus spot.

It may well be true that the central focus spot on an
Elan II or 7 works better with slow lenses and low
contrast subjects, but the focus tracking ability of
the 3 is so much better that I'd never consider using
my IIe to shoot soccer.  Maybe for birds moving
parallel to the film plane, that's not an issue.
