Same here, I find the push-pull does not help me in anyway for that last bit
of fine tuning the composition, especially for the fast action airshow and
car racing shots that I do most, the lens tends move around too much, which
is amplified by the long focal length I typically use this lens at.
But maybe this is one way for Canon to keep the collapsed length of this
lens to be so short, it helps to keep everything organized in my camera bag.
As for quality, it's excellent for a zoom, I've used the non-IS EF 300 f4
lens, and the 100-400 does not loose any quality to it, at least none that I
can tell. I did some impromptu portraiture of a friend with the 100-400 as
we were driving to an airshow, I was already impressed by the 4x6 from the
neighborhood one-hour service, but it wasn't until I got some 8x10 printed
by a commercial lab, and just "candid" service, not "custom" service, did I
realize how sharp the lens was, her hair, eyes, clothing etc all came out
with incredible detail, one of the shot is by far the best portraiture I've
ever taken, and the lens was set at f5.6 with 550EX for fill.
The part that surprised me the most is that all these shots were hand held
at close to 400mm focal length! I am sold on IS !!

Ken
