That's my gripe, too.  I've tried 2 different samples
of this lens, and found both very difficult to zoom
smoothly.  I actually bought one, and ended up
returning it.  At a later date, I tried a used one,
thinking maybe with some "breaking in" it would get
better.  But it was just the same.

A shame, because otherwise it would be a perfect lens
for my soccer photography.  Instead, I use a 70-200 w/
2X, but I'd sure like to have the IS.
