Isn't it almost a rule that fixed focus are sharper then zooms (except
maybe some L lenses?!)...

I shoot 95% slides and shoot a lot at with tha aperture set to f8!

Another reason (and maybe this is also important for you) is that I one
day will buy a EF200/2.8 which has also a 72mm filter thread. I once was
thinking of replacing my EF28-105 with a EF28-135, and yes this one uses
again a 72mm filter thread! That way my expensive B+W slim (UV & CPOL)
filter can be used...
