I drop in my local camera shop every few weeks, and note the EOS bodies
that are there. The 3 bodies sit there for long times. I have to assume most
of the previous 3 owners were pros. Of course my local store isn't a perfect
indicator of EOS bodies, it does tell me some things about what's being
traded in. People trade in stuff they don't want or aren't completely happy
with. Not every pro is looking for a camera with the fastest AF speed to
shoot action. 100 percent viewfinder is something I for one am looking for.
I think more than any photographer category, pros look at bodies very
carefully for what they need. Not every pro is looking for E-TTL either.
However, they are looking for a well-sealed, bullet proof camera like the
1N. Myself included, I'm thinking to pick up a used 1N, instead of a new 3
for these reasons. Pros often manually focus I might add, I know I do. While
the 1V of course is a nice camera, I have the feeling some of those 3 bodies
on the shelf were traded in for a 1V. Others may have been traded in by
amateurs who indeed found the 3 too much camera in some ways, and too little
in others like no built in flash. In fact after looking at a 1V, I decided
I'd like a slightly more 'basic' camera like the 1N.
ECF has no place on a pro camera that I can see. Otherwise, wouldn't the
1V have it? I'm just speculating of course. Every camera has a different
reason why it's traded in. But, I still find it interesting the bodies that
are on the shelf used. And, I think it says something about the 3 that I see
them for sale used, more than any other body. I've seen them here in Japan,
I've seen them back in Canada. While I'm not an expert at the features of
the 3, and I've never used one. I think that if I was to spring for a PRO
body, I'd either go all the way with a 1V, or get a good used 1N. The 3
seems to fall into a middle category. It's nice, but not quite pro, not
quite amateur.
