Nothing personal, but this statement makes no sense.
Acording to Canon (and to my seat of the pants
impressions, having owned both at the same time) the 3
is exactly the equal of the 1n in terms of weather
sealing. The only place the body appears to be any
weaker is the baseplate, and the trade-off for that is
that the shutter in the 3 is rated for far more shots
than the 1n. You'd need to use your EOS 3 as a hammer
to find any real weakness compared to the 1n.

Yeah? The 3 isn't really and different than the 1n in
that regard. The standard screens in both are pretty
bad for manual focusing, and the 3 will accept all the
same accessory screens that the 1n will.

That's your opinion, for your shooting needs. Other
folks have different opinions and needs, and you
shouldn't project your requirements onto anyone else.

According to Canon, it's because they couldn't fit the
45 pt AF, ECF and a built in diopter all at the same
time (using the technology they had during the design
phase), and more pros want the diopter than ECF. Many
pros are also conservative, and don't want something
that hasn't yet been proven over a long periord of
time. It wasn't all that long ago that Canon still
made the F1-N, because pros didn't trust AF, and
wouldn't use a camera that required a battery to
work). I'd give odds that the eventual replacement
for the 1v will have ECF.
I'm just speculating of course. Every

But other's have reported that THEIR shops have no, or
almost no, used 3s available. So who's extremely
limited and totally unscientific survey is correct?
You're probably correct that most pros will go for a
1v over a 3, but that doesn't say anything bad about
the 3. It says the 1v offers even more (which it damn
well should at the price).
But you shouldn't sell the 3 short (especially since
you've never even use one--talk about speaking with a
certain lack of authority). It does probably 90% of
what the 1v does, and more than any lower priced Canon
model except for the lack of a built in flash. It's
one hell of a sophisticated, competent picture taking
tool. If money were no object (or I could depreciate
the thing on my tax return), I might well choose a 1v
instead. But in truth, there's almost nothing I'd do
with a 1v I can't do with my 3. Short of going to war
or shooting in a sandstorm or hurricane, I can't
imange the 1v surviving a situation that would make
the 3 fail. And if you think the 3 is too heavy, you
should try a 1v!
As I said, I had a 1n and a 3. I find the 3 superior
in almost all, respects. I wish it had the built in
diopter and eyepiece blind, but that's about it. It's
got faster, more accurate AF, a far better flash
system, better vertical controls (with the PB-E2), and
a faster frame rate (if you need it, I really don't).
I will grant that the 1n looks better, however.
