I heard there were three reasons:

  * Diopter
  * 100% viewfinder
  * the ECF is not 100% accurate

In an interview on a Malaysian EOS site, the third reason is given the most
prominence. The EOS-1v is a pro camera and Canon tries to make sure that
pro-features are 100% solid. Since ECF doesn't work in all situations, all
circumstances, they thought it was inappropriate for a pro camera.
