I took the Nikon School of Photography a few years ago and in one segment
they showed side-by-side scenes with excellent contrast/saturation and the
same scene with mediocre contrast/saturation. We all presumed they'd used
some pol filters or fancy developing or hot ED glass. They showed us that
the scenes with the excellent contrast/saturation were taken with lenses
with lens hoods. That was THE ONLY difference.

I am no longer convinced that expensive glass is an absolute requirement
for excellent images.

Does this say that their hot ED glass is badly affected by flare and needed
a lens hood?
Or does it say that Nikkor 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 D produces the same result as
the 28-70 f/2.8 D-AFS when a lens hood is attached?
I wasn't convinced that only expensive glass can take excellent images as
well, until I saw the pictures. There is a difference between good and
excellence. If I can do anything to my EF28-105 to get the same (or near)
stunning images of the 28-70L for a fraction of the cost, I'll definitely do
it.
