I wasn't convinced that only expensive glass can take excellent images as
well, until I saw the pictures. There is a difference between good and
excellence. If I can do anything to my EF28-105 to get the same (or near)
stunning images of the 28-70L for a fraction of the cost, I'll definitely do
 it.

HI,
While lens hood is a very good idea, a must, I would say, high quality glass
is what gets you that stunning quality. And there are a lot of variables like
that - hood, film, filters, etc. While there are some very good consumer
zooms, Pro glass is where the highest quality comes from. But it's all up to
photographer - what do you call good results and high quality. Some images
would just be impossible with slow consumer zooms. Primes, even cheaper ones
get you closer to a Pro quality, but there Pro prime lenses as well.
So, all in all - it comes down to how serious you are about your pictures.
Myself, I took a long road, - thinking that good consumer lenses will deliver
all the results I want. It only ended up costing me more - when I had to sell
those, to upgrade to Pro level lenses. It's true what they say - it's the
photographer who makes the picture, not the equipment, but it's all relative.
Surely better lenses will help you get good results and encourage you as a
photographer.
And if you just want to take some vacation family photos - cheaper P&S will
do just fine.
If you are serious about your photography and want to save money in a long
run - get best lens you can. It may take longer to get it - due to cost, but
it will save you money at the end. Plus anytime you want to sell a Pro level
lens - you will always get most of your money back.
