I had the same dilemma. 28-135IS with extra range at the end, or a 2.8 lens
which I heard was optically superior. THe Nikon version of Tokina 2.8 lens
had great reviews (had some problems with some Nikon bodies, it was ok with
canon bodies, but optically got very good reviews). I ended up getting the
Tokina 28-80 2.8 lens. It gives me more range with flash, can use it for
portraits if my 100mm is not around.

deltainternational.com had this lens for a good price.

I also agree that web pictures are not very good for such comparisons. I
recently did a b&w shoot for a band and ended up with very sharp detailed
picturtures. From the extensive questioning I did about the two lenses
(Tokina 2.8 28-80 and Canon IS 28-135), it seems to me that TOkina is
optically better, and has f2.8 for lower light, whereas IS lens does not,
but it has a maybe, and only maybe, somewhat faster focusing (though TOkina
is very good as well) and a longer range.

Tokina 2.8 28-80: The lens is pretty sturdy, feels solid. Clutch manual
shifting is a good idea (better than flipping a switch). Comes with a lens
hood. Didn't experience flare as much. 77mm filter thread.

I can provide a .tif or low compresion .jpg file that I got from scanning a
negative if anybody wants.
