Howard, 

I can't really answer your question from an authoritative technical
POV, but I can tell you that the pictures from my 28-135 and the
Tamron 20-40 are much sharper than those from the 28-90.  Now of
course this could have to do with simply superior optics, but the
barrel slop may have something to do with it.  The 28-135 and the
75-300 have comparable barrel play, but the 28-135 is a bit sharper,
so there I think it's pure optics.  The 28-135 and the 20-40 are
comparable in sharpness, with perhaps a slight edge to the 20-40, and
the 20-40 has no barrel play, so as you can see, it's hard to say what
effect it has.  I did notice that someone else reported no play in
their 28-105, so you may want to check yours out.
