Since you haven't done anything about this 'play' in the lenses I assume that 
they are functioning fine and you consider them normal.  What I want to avoid 
is sending in a lens for repair (still on warranty) that doesn't need it.  
Besides the wasted time if you send something in to be fixed that doesn't 
really need it I am always concerned that it may come back not that right 
since it had to be opened and toyed with.  I suspect that they would not 
replace it with a new one since it seems to be functioning OK.  I do wonder 
about differences in production lines since on the usenet group I had 
questioned, some folks seemed to think it was OK and some had the same lens 
with no 'play'.

At any rate, I sent in a question about it to tech support from the Canon USA 
website.  I will let this group know how they answer the question.
