I love mine. I have taken it all over the world, and it takes 
magnificent photos. It is pretty heavy, but I find that coming back 
with the best possible photos is more important than an occasional 
neck ache.   :-)

The 28-70L isn't compatible with either of Canon's converters, and I 
would caution you about spending that much on a fine 'L' lens and 
using a cheap extender on it.

No experience with diopters.
