I've used both the 28-70 and the 28-135.
Unfortunately, I don't think either of them is an
ideal travel lens, although for my taste the 28-135
comes closer.

The 28-70, for me, is just too narrow a range of focal
lengths. I see a bit "telephoto," I ugess, and 70mm
just doesn't do it.

The range of the 28-135 is great, but even with IS
it's to d*** slow indoors, and DOF is too deep
sometimes. Maybe the 28-135 plus a 50mm 1.8. The 50
isn't very big or heavy, so it's not much of a burden
to carry it, and it gives you a lot more speed, and
less DOF, when you need it. Unfortunately, I find
28mm a bit limiting sometimes, to.

My urban assault kit <g>, when I'm going out to do
some serious shooting, used to consist of a 17-35, a
28-135, a 50mm 1.8 and a 100-300 USM. But I no longer
have the 100-300, and the 70-200 2.8 is awfully heavy,
so I may need to do something about that. I may add a
small flash for fill work, too.
