I've used small softboxes for the 550EX and found the effect is still too
harsh, after all, to make light soft you need a large diffused emitting
surface as to not cause harsh shadows, a small softbox like a Lumiquest just
isn't large enough.

I've tried a few times using a 36" diameter silver umbrella mounted on light
stand with the 550EX, the ST-E2 on the camera serve as the controller. This
set up works well but the umbrella soaks up so much light output that I have
found that I need to use 400 ASA film to register enough light from the
model. The benefit of this set up is the various elements collapse easily
and quickly into small pieces to carry around.

If Canon or a 3rd party manufacturer come out with a medium to high power
flash head that is fully compatible with the Canon wireless E-TTL system, I
would be the first one in line to buy it.

Ken
