I agree with you 100%.

In spanish we have a saying that will translate to something like "Each thieve
judges others from his own condition (of thieve)".

Even when a couple of 550EX are not gear a pro would use in a studio, is more
than a decent setup for an enthusiast that likes to setup "ministudios" for
whatever reason (still-life, family portraits, etc...)
We also agree that there're means to soften that light and even when they don't
get up to the standards of professional studios, it's much better than the
micro-flash output of a P&S (that's close to a punctual source of light, with
all the dissadvantages it  creates)

I think the main limitation would be your mind thinking that you need the
bigger/(better?) gear to do your job.

[side-note] As an alternative, you could participate in the flash contest
running now in Practical Photography (UK) . A complete studio setup worth $$$$
is the big prize.
