You can form light (bounce, reflect, barn doors, honeycomb grid)
also with non wireless systems.

If you care for rather flat lighting, TTL will work there.

At around 400 USD per piece, yes. You can buy WOC slave flashes
at approximately the same power output for around 60 USD.
Mains operated, constant in result (manual mode), reliable.

I use anything from a simple slave flash for 10 USD up to
big studio flash heads. The priciples of lighting are always 
the same. Bounce off a large white thing and you have soft light.
