I do not know about the 550ex and the wireless functions as I have
none of those units. But I do know that it is entirely possible to
light stuff with small battery powered strobes. I do it all the time
in my location work.

I generally use a vivitar 283 bounced out of an umbrella or off a
wall, if the wall is white. I frequently use this in conjunction
with a small dynalite or as a stand alone light, or set it up off
camera then use another flash on camera and dial it back so that it
is a secondary light. This works really well to give you good light
that is in liteweight kit.

Often I think people try to make things harder than they have to be.
Admittedly the 283 out of an umbrella does not give much light, but
then I seldom want much light...I like narrow DOF to separate my
subject from the background.

Now, I personally would not use this type of set up in a studio, but
for doing an enviro portrait of a person in his office/surroundings
the battery strobe/dynalite setup is great...heck I can fit this all
in a King Pellican case, the dynalite (uni400jr), 2 283's, batteries
(quantum) umbrellas, stands, cords, radio slave.

As they say it ain't the gear, it is how you use it that matters.
