Hi Greg, I used 2 550EX flashes and softboxes + ST-E2, you can see details and results at Daniel's site:

It's simply too weak ;o(( For big softbox you'll need powerful studio flash. However the IR transmission was OK even when flash was inside. If you have any questions contact me directly.
