It strikes me that this is one of those 'how many pixels can dance
on the head of a pin' type of problems.

Two articles I've encountered recently have added a lot to how
I think about these issues.

The first article is a discussion by Galen Rowell about the qualitative
difference he has experienced with scanned 35mm film output
on digital printers compared to conventional enlargements.

The second link is to one of the most informative discussions I've
encountered on digital print/film resolution.

I'm currently shooting with an eos3 and using a film scanner
and photoshop as a digital darkroom. For prints I use an Epson
inkjet printer. I have no plans to return to a conventional darkroom.
I'm yearning for a D60. Photography moving into the digital realm
is compelling and rewarding for me.
