The 200/2.8L is definitely faster. A lot depends also on the body, at least this is my impression. It works a whole lot better with the 1N than with the 5 in continuous AF mode (AI servo). A difference like night and day. And no, the 80-200L doesn't have USM. It's a good lense, even more at its going price. My main gripes with it are the big minimum focus distance and the incompatibility with Canon TCs, not so much AF speed.
