OK For what it is worth ... http://medfmt.8k.com/third/af.html I've found exactly the same in home-brew tests. By eye, if I focus manually the focus ring lens ends up in precisely the same position. By AF, there is almost always some uncertainty: sometimes it gets a lock in one position, then another ... the camera remaining fixed on the tripod. There is no doubt that AF and AE have thier place, it's how I hold the camera when I'm not expecting to take a shot. But just because it can AF does not mean you have to let it decide for you ...
