Speaking as a Canadian (albeit one living for now in the USA), I'd have to agree that FedEx has been far easier to deal with with regards to customs and brokering than UPS. I have a lot of experience with this - my previous job (in Canada) involved a lot of cross-border shipping. Eventually we just switched to FedEx entirely because of the hassles.


I don't understand why there's an either/or thing going on here, though. Surely the best solution would be to give customers the choice of shipping between 2 or 3 carriers, as many mail order companies do. As noted in this discussion, FedEx may be better than UPS for some areas and vice-versa. Dictating the sole carrier seems to me rather unfortunate and sales may be lost either way as a result.
