It may very well be as Willem-Jan Markerink says in that Canon merely does not advertise the new 28-300L as being usable with the teleconverters. I use the older Canon 35-350L on rare occasion with the Canon teleconverters and it works just fine. I hear the grinding of glass on glass only occasionally... (kidding). But I do use the teleconverters with that lens (autofocus and all).
