I just assumed the 70-300mm was the replacement for the old, first-generation 75-300mm IS. It looks like in addition to the newer IS system and DO elements, it has true ring USM for FTM and a distance scale, unlike it's predecessor. I was a bit aggravated to see that it cost more than twice what the old lens did unless there's a big difference between list and street price. I fact, it would be the most expensive non-L lens Canon has ever made by a mile (or 1.6km).
Another really interesting comment in the release was this: "The IS system automatically detects lack of movement / vibration to prevent operation errors when a tripod is in use", which implies that tripod detection is now automatic instead of the previous dual mode uni/bi-directional IS switch, although the chart indicates there are still two modes. And the comparison photos show it's really TINY compared to the 75-300mm. If Canon managed to significantly improve upon the optical formula found in the existing 75/90/100-300mm consumer zooms, it will be a quite popular lens, and a nice spmall alternative to the 100-400IS when you want to travel light. I think it's also the first non-L lens to come complete with the hood and case, as well. The lack of TC compatibility will insure the continued sales of the 100-400 I suppose, especially for film users. I tried to see if the 1D II supported AF up to f/8 like Canon's best film bodies, but couldn't find it in the release. Did the 1D? I was also surprised to see the flash sync speed was cut in half from the 1D but that the LCD display had nearly twice the pixels in the same size (s") diplay as the older camera. I wonder if Canon has any other goodies in store for PMA?
