Sometimes I think we're all getting way too picky.
The 70-200 IS + 2xII makes images (when properly
focused) that are sharper and more contrasty than
prize-winning and/or published photos I took in the
1970s. Does the 2x reduce sharpness and contrast? Of
course. Does it reduce it to unacceptable levels?
Only if you're more interested in shooting test charts
than making photographs.

Certainly if you're planning 30x40 enlargements, you
should be shooting with the sharpest lenses available.
But for 11x14, and even 16x20, many of today's
"amateur" lenses are good enough, and the 2xII mated
to a number of L lenses is more than good enough.

That said, the 100-400 + 2xII is pushing the edges of
acceptable. Put in on a tripod, stop down a couple of
stops, and you'll get images that are usable. But
wide open you'll find things pretty soft.
