My opinion, and that's all it is, is that Canon aiming
at larger and larger sensors as costs come down. They
show no inclination to make a set of small sensor
lenses, and consistently provide the largest sensor
possible at a given price point. So I think you'll
eventually see a new camera (whether a replacement for
the 10d or an addition I can't say) with the same
sensor as the 1DII but at a lower price point, and a
1DIII (or similar) with the sensor that's currently in
the 1Ds.

Nikon, OTOH, seems committed to the smaller sensor
size, using it even in their highest priced digital
cameras and introductin a set of smaller format
lenses.

So we'll have a situation where the "backwards
compatible" Nikon F-mount is even more fragmented and
incompatible, while The Canon EOS mount will work
accross all bodies in the EOS line. With the anomoly
of the low-cost "S" mnount lens for the Rebel as an
exception.

And I don't care how good an APS-C sized sensor can
be, a full frame sensor of the same or larger pixel
count is capable of being better. The only issue, in
my mind, is whether the larger file sizes are worth
the trade-off. But as cameras and computers continue
to get faster, storage cheaper, and interfaces better,
the larger file sizes won't be a big issue.
