Yes... but you need to conform to the directory requirements of the
camera and/or printer:
For example, the 10D uses the DCIM directory as the root
and then subdirectories off of each of these to hold the images.
Each subdirectory is named 100...999.
The file numbering scheme is explained on p.161 of the
10D manual (English version).
In the past I've copied images from the PC to a Canon
G2 to create a small, portable, slideshow device for display
on a TV. IIRC I just copied to a numbered sub-directory
of DCIM and the camera displayed them fine.

I do this... but in my case the PC used to extract the photos
off the card does a recursive scan of all directories so it
doesn't matter where I place the photos on the card!
