I can't see a canon 12-24 type lens being very affordable at all.

I've got the Sigma 15-30 and it's a nice lens. Autofcous isn't quiet or fast
but it's a wide angle so I frequently use it manual focus anyway (the other
big plus is it has all the hyperfocal markings). I've been very pleased with
image quality, certainly blows away the 300d kit lens.
