For starters, ditch the tent!  You need two black plastic garbage bags.
One to put over your backpack, and one for you to huddle inside under a
tree.  Depending on how heavy your tent is, you might have already made
enough allowance for the lens.

I'd suggest that you get a P&S with a stupid-long optical zoom and a
small tripod for backpacking trips.  Save the real optics for day hikes
when the weight is more managable.
