Hi Tom,

That is probably (meaning: almost in all Canon EF
cases) is due, in large part, to Ring USM lens drives.
Non USM lenses or ones with Micromotor USM would be
slower in AF, IMHO. Ring USM would mean a faster or a
"snappier" feel to the AF speed, comparatively
speaking. Other factors I think that would contribute
to that would be the weight of the lens assembly and
design parameters etc.
