I have a Canon A520 (as well as 2 film EOS's a 20D and 4x5 large format film
camera) I really like the A520 for holidays and general snapshots. We just
visited China and Korea and I took a 24mm lens on a film EOS (for nice
wides) and the A510 for everything else. The A520 produced great images
(mainly shot on 100ISO) and some nice AVI movies of things that only a
sweeping panorama can show. I was quite surprised to find how well the
images compared with the 35mm film scans. Its hard to compare a 2900 dpi
scan of a wider angle image on film to a point n shoot, but for my money it
worked very well.

I've also had a IXUS before, and like the slightly larger size of the A520
better.

I like the manual focus ability (bus window reflections are no trap) for
detail shots of items and architectual details.

I like the AA batterys (oops we forgot to charge it, just buy some, and I
get much longer time from them than the people beside me with IXUS cameras
simple looking at the mA/H ratings of both battery systems will give that
away)

I got it quite cheap, and while its 4MP (2272 x 1704) going to 5MP is only a
small increase to 2816 x 2112. Keeping in mind that more pixels are squeezed
into the same area image capture device.

I can't see that the advantage gain in pixels will counter the noise gained
by smaller sensor sizes. I also have a coolpix 990 (love that swivel screen
and macro) which is 3MP and gives much better signal to noise than the Canon
does

hope this helps
