Not to beat a dead horse. I had a bunch of gear stolen over the holidays,
including my "Mk.I" EF 50/1.8. I'm awaiting the check from my insurance,
and contemplating some replacements. It would appear the qualities of
this earlier lens have been discovered, and although I see some going for
as low as $150 (I paid $60 for mine) many of them are approaching the cost
of the f/1.4 version.

Thanks

Ken,
Currently I have 3 of Canon's 50s. Last summer I took the EF 50 f2.5 compact
macro when travelling. It allowed me to capture Alpine flowers, majestic
scenery and when necessary town views, with high resolution and without
distortion with my 5D. I also have the f1.4 which needed a repair to its
focus mechanism two years ago - I can only guess that I must have knocked it
somehow without realising, and the 50 f1.8 MkI. (I gave the MkII away - how
Canon has the audacity to charge for such a poorly designed piece of
plastic, I don't know.)
I've had the 50 f1.8 MkI for a year or two, and have now started giving it a
workout on my 5D. Too early to comment, but it was OK on my 10D. (Had to
buy an EOS620 plus lens just to get my hands on a MkI!)
