I don't see how the number on the CF card controls the numbering of the
image. I think the 20D keeps track and unless manually set to zero the
sequence will continue from card to card.
I had a card that had 137CANON on it and removed it to keep a shoot
separate and put in a freshly formatted card. The 137 counter was IMG_
3782. After the shoot I put the original card in the 20D and shot some
other stuff. The "folders" on the original card are now 137CANON and
138CANON the 138CANON folder starts at IMG_3855.
If the card was the boss, every time a freshly formatted was inserted
the counter would reset according to the way I understand what I've
read. If the card controls the numbering how is what happened here
explained?
