For the 1 series, there is a utility from Canon (cancount) that will tell
you the number of shutter actuations.

Besides rolling the counter over, you can reset the image number
unintentionally by using a card from another camera (it will start using
that number) or by simply resetting the counter in the menu or even by
telling the camera to start renumbering every time you format the card.
