The concept of a new lens mount for a full frame Canon isn't that ridiculous. Have you seen the size of the Olympus mount compared to the sensor size? That system was designed for digital from the start, and it enables them to design lenses that are more nearly telecentric, and that is the goal of designers when it comes to digital lenses. The Canon EF mount is fine for 1.6 and even maybe 1.3 crop cameras, but it just isn't wide enough for full frame and optimal performance. The 5D shows the limits of most Canon lenses, let alone a new higher pixel count 1Ds.

Canon could easily design a wider mount that would work well for new high performance lenses designed for full frame, and still have an adapter that allows current EF lenses to retain full functionality.
