All I know is what I hear from two friends who are well-connected with the
folks at Canon... the
"rumor" (unsubstantiated as it may be) is that the 1Ds Mark 3 will have a
new lens mount, and all
new lenses.... that the technology will be so good that the current L glass
won't be good enough
anymore...

But, please remember, what I hear is unsubstantiated. One of my friends has
been selling cameras
for over 20 years and he has heard the same thing. Breaks MY heart.... I
will NOT go there if it
happens. And yes, I agree, it would be STUPID.

Sounds pretty impossible, Canon would have announced this incompatibility
along with the 1D Mk3 announcement, rather than still keeping it a surprise
even now when the 1D Mk3 is due in the stores in May.

The FD to EF mount change many years ago was necessary to bring auto focus
into the game, sure Nikon kept their mount so their older lens can still be
used with the new bodies but without any AF or IS or otherwise, but Canon
felt it was necessary to go to a different mount, I can accept that.

Canon introduced the EF-S a couple of years ago for the smaller sensor
DSLRs, but all EF lenses are still usable with the EF-S bodies, so even if
(and that is a BIG IF) Canon does come out with a "different" lens mount for
the 1D Mk3, it would be so that all EF lenses are still compatible, Canon
cannot afford to alienate their clientele out there with the investment in
their EF lens system.

My favourite camera store gave me a copy of the Spring 2007 EOS System
booklet last week, which covers all the Canon digital and 35mm SLR bodies,
EF and EF-S lenses, all photo accessories and printers. Nowhere is there
even a hint of yet another format of lens for the 1D Mk3, there is a picture
of the bare 1D Mk3 housing without the lens mounted and it looked just like
the standard EF mount, there is another picture of the 1D Mk3 with an
EF-50mm f1.4 lens mounted on it.

So I think it's pretty safe to bet that even if there is a sliver of truth
to this rumour that the 1D Mk3 will have a new lens mount, it is going to be
at least compatible with the EF lens format.

Not that I would believe for a nano second that Canon would be hiding this
"secret" still at this point, they have absolutely nothing to gain and
everything to loose if they were to pull this stunt.

Maybe this rumour is an effort of dis-information by Nikonians?

:-)
