Just to pile onto the rumor-mongering here...

I had heard somewhere of a new medium-format digital Canon with a new lens
series, and that was what was causing the rumors of a new 35mm lens mount
system.

Me neither, I did get fast and courteous attention at the DMV once.

But as far as the FD mount becoming history, the FD -> EOS transition 
was almost a necessity given the state of technology. Grafting 
electronic links to the FD mount would've been quite the kludge, and 
with the new mount Canon got way ahead of Nikon on autofocus. Have you 
seen the AF contraption involving a screwdriver blade on some Nikkor 
lenses?

It wasn't fun to start anew (and I still have my FD cameras and lenses) 
but the pain eventually went away.
