Randy, if you look closely at your pitot tube you will see that there are
actually two tubes going to the pitot head. One of those tubes is the
static tube. It vents onto the sides of the pitot head. If you remove
the top rear aluminum strip between the wing panel and the center section
you will see two tubes going across the gap just behind the rear spar.
One is your pitot tube, one is your static tube. They both enter the
fuselage and go behind the panel. If the static tube is not connected to
your altimeter you should get a mechanic to reconnect it.

Please excuse my ignorance on this but in trying to track down why my
altimeter was off by a couple of hundred feet I noticed that it was not
connected to anything at all... just attatched to the panel. I then found
that my Ercoupe has no static port. I have 2 coupes and upon checking the
other one I found it to be the same. Is this common? How can I (Can I?)
install a static port or correct the problem? Do I need to? I am planning
on upgrading the venturi, installing a vertical speed and D.G. Any help
would be appreciated.
