Hi Dave, Welcome to the list and I think you are in the right place. It is always hard to describe damage in just words but from what I read you only have damage to the sheet metal wrapped around the front of the wing leading edge, is this correct? If it is then yes it can be repaired by cutting out the damaged area and making a doubler to fit inside the cut out area that would extend behind the undamaged area and out into the hole. You would then lay in a flush patch. all of this would be riveted into place and the flush patch would need some blind rivets to close it. The size of the repaired area would dictate the demissions of the material used and the rivet pattern to be used and your IA would be able to give you the plan of exactly what to remove and what size the replacement material need to be, which he will draw on the back of a FAA form 337 and get it approved by the FAA prior to you doing the work. If it were me I would just replace the damaged skin because it would be a simpler task and it should be able to be done with just a log entry if a factory part is used as the replacement. There are many wings around with bad spars that could be donors of this skin and perhaps someone on the list would be willing to remove one from a dead wing and sell it to you for a reasonable price. You may also be able to purchase it from Univair at a higher price. Last week I would have suggested Skyport but it may be a few weeks before they are ready to help with this kind of problem. Good luck with the repair in any case. Best regards, Vern ----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Hello, I'm a first time writer and new to ercoupe ownership - hope I'm using the correct group. I am recovering (under the supervision of an IA) the wings of my 1946 415C. There is damage to one of the leading edges due to striking a runway light. It created a 6 inch tear from the very front and continued all the way through the bottom side of the leading edge only. The light hit right between two nose ribs and about 1/2 way down the wing. There is no damage to the top side of the leading edge (or spar). Does anyone know if it's mandatory that I replace the entire leading edge or is there an approved way to repair the tear only? The rest of the leading edge looks very good. Of course, I'll check with my mechanic too. Also wondering if there are any areas that have to receive additional attention while we're in there. Inside has been zinc chromated and looks very good (did they leave the factory zinc chromated?). No corrosion that we could see. Plane had the swiss cheese AD prior to the damage and was in annual. Thanks in advance for any response.
