I agree...  Cutting holes should be a last resort.
In fact two A.P.'s I know have said that they would never cut a hole
behind
the exhaust at any point on the airframe.  Too great a risk of pulling the
exhaust into the plane and will that would be bad.

I see the bore scope as the best option...  Assuming you can find someone
with the appropriate unit.
