Title: Re: [COUPERS-TECH] Oil temp.

Yo, Robert

Kevin is 100% right.  Coolers are not common because oil temperature in a coupe with properly fitted baffling should, as a ³rule of thumb², stabilize around ambient free air temperature plus 100ºF.  Even in the deserts of Arizona, Nevada and California this is adequate margin to climb into cooler air before the oil temperature reaches ³red line² of 225ºF (unless you¹re shooting touch-and-goes in early afternoon).  Consider, also, that our approved ³paper² redlines for A-65, C-75, C-85, C-90 or O-200 engines never change.

When these engines were in production, 225ºF oil redlines actually related to temperatures above which the lubrication film began to fail.  Today, our lubrication film is ³good² to the same temperatures approved for a modern higher-horsepower turbocharged unit of proportional bearing area(s) using the same aviation oil.

Higher approved engine oil redlines for reciprocating engines certified more recently properly reflect the improved lubrication characteristics of today¹s aviation oil with today¹s additives.  When our ³old² engines use that oil, such increased operational range (before damage) applies to them, whether approved or not.  This is one of too many instances where our supremely unresponsive aviation regulatory system has become out of touch with reality.

It seems apparent that your Air Wolf installation is a pretty effective oil cooler in it¹s own right!  I have yet to see the extra weight (and maintenance) of a separate oil cooler justified.

180 is ideal to boil off the condensation. 120 is too low. So is 150 but it is closer. Is anyone else using a cooler?

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Oil temp.

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----
I just installed an Air wolf oil filter on my Coupe the filter mounts on the firewall. (Not hard to install) The reason I did not go with the engine mounted one is that I have an oil cooler installed on that pad and I did not want to remove it. I now have added an extra quart of oil and the filter housing is on the right side of the firewall partly in the exiting air stream of the cowling. My question is what is minimum oil temperature? Normally after flying a while my temp would go to just under 150 degrees, now the temp barely gets over 120 degrees. (approximately)

Any advice would help, Thanks.
