You mentioned:
the attendant loss of much of the shock absorption of that  nose gear (with 
the cable attached).
Is this fact or an opinion?  My opinion is that it wouldn't  affect the 
shock absorption potential of the strut that much.  The  initial part of the 
stroke is usually pretty "soft".
