At work, we've used the jetdirect 170x series with success. It's a 10
Base-T only box, but for a fairly slow application like printing, it
doesn't matter.
I've configured them from an OS/2 box using telnet, no Windows software
involved. The first one we used was for a LaserJet 4 (much cheaper
than the plugin module) and another was used with a venerable LaserJet
IIID. We did need to install a "TCPIP port" on the Windows machines to
get them to talk to the print servers, but OS/2 and probably any sort
of *nix seem to understand the concept natively.
It's a bit cheaper, less than $150.00. I believe we got the first one
mailorder, and the second one from Office Depot here in Eugene. We've
had the first one a couple of years now, no problems with it. The
specifications can be found near the web page cited for the 300x
mentioned in your original note.
